The students focused their group work on the practical aspects of community mental health care by investigating the numbers of local residents with a mental illness and a government-issued mental disability certificate. They also focused on the legislative aspects of mental health care and welfare by researching the Act on Mental Health and Welfare for the Mentally Disabled, the Act on Comprehensive Support for Persons with Disabilities, the Basic Act on Suicide Prevention, and the Act on Prevention of Child Abuse. Moreover, they learned about community health issues from the perspective of mental illness and their relationships to a range of factors, including living environments, culture, natural disasters, and history. Through their participation in the group work activity, the students perceived that the roles of nurses in community mental health care could be characterized by the following semantic units: 1) Developing patient guidance based on an understanding of local community attributes; 2) Understanding the relationship between mental illness and living environment; 3) Nurses should inform local residents about community attributes and initiatives; 4) Nurses should understand and utilize social resources; and 5) Engaging in interactions and activities that help prevent mental illness. The students also learned that these characteristics will be useful in their own future nursing
