The purpose of this study is to clarify the viewpoint and technique of students in acquiring an understanding of the elderly in gerontological nursing practice. We analyzed case studies of 38 students and classified the findings into categories and sub-categories. Consequently, the results were divided into 4 categories: <Observation>,<Deepening of Communication>,<Affirmation of Lifestyle> and <Creation of a Safe and Secure Environment>. Through this training, students gained a new perspective in regard to the thought process of the elderly and the importance of a respectful manner when interacting with them. Students remarked that previously they had been reluctant to communicate with the elderly directly, but that they now feel more confident in their abilities of communication, assessment and observation in their role of providing care and assistance to the
