Currently there are lots of people with balance disorders, but no fundamental treatment has yet been established for vestibular dysfunction, which is a cause of balance disorders. Therefore, the development of new treatments for vestibular dysfunction is an important research theme in order to extend healthy life expectancy. Mice are commonly used as animals for research on vestibular function in the inner ear, but guinea pigs are also considered to be an appropriate and more convenient animal model due to the ease of surgical access to the inner ear. However, at present, no easy method for evaluating vestibular function in guinea pigs has been established. Therefore, we attempted to develop the Rotarod system using guinea pigs. The results showed that the time to fall was shorter in the drug damaged group compared to control groups, suggesting that the system may be useful as a system for evaluating vestibular function. |
