The purpose of this study was to clarify the aspects of Post Traumatic Growth (PTG) in families of mentally disabled persons and to examine how support for families of mentally disabled persons should be provided. After receiving referrals from subjects with permission from their outpatient physicians, the principal investigator explained the purpose and methods of the study in writing and orally, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with subjects who gave consent. Qualitative inductive analysis was conducted using NVivo 14, a qualitative data analysis software. As a result of the analysis, four categories were extracted: “gaining spiritual strength as a person,” “appreciating life,” “being supported by relationships with others,” and “gaining new insights in dealing with family illness. The PTG of mentally disabled family members was similar in aspects to existing PTG. On the other hand, the subcategories of “gaining spiritual strength as a person,” “not caring about the world” and “not comparing one's life with others” may be characteristic aspects of families of mentally disabled persons who have faced prejudice against mental illness and mental disability. is important for nurses to improve their listening skills and establish a support system within the organization through cooperation among multiple professions in order to support the families of mentally disabled persons. In addition, through family psychoeducation and other means, it is possible that new values will be reconstructed and PTG will be promoted by reframing and making sense of the onset of mental illness in the family. In addition, the provision of knowledge about mental illness and information about social resources may also promote PTG in the families of mentally disabled persons. |
